ABOUT US

Serving the most vulnerable

It was during the Common Legal Tradition Bars International Conference (CIB) and under the leadership of Bâtonnier Mario Stasi and Titinga Pacéré, President of the Bar Association, that Avocats Sans Frontières (Lawyers Without Borders) was born, with the adoption of a resolution at a congress held in Yaoundé (Cameroon) in December 1991.

After the meeting those lawyers decided that Avocats Sans Frontières would have its seat in Brussels. This was the creation of the first organization Avocats Sans Frontières.

The first large-scale operation led by Avocats Sans Frontières was "Justice for All at Rwanda "; implemented from the end of 1994 to the end of 1996, it consisted in organizing the defense by foreign lawyers of accused and victims of the genocide before the Rwandan courts; this experience, founder for the Movement, was also in the history of Justice a great première
and had unanimously acclaimed success.

From 1998, more organizations Avocats Sans Frontières / Lawyers Without Borders were developed, with the creation of national associations in Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Mali, Mauritania, Sweden and Switzerland. Later, other national associations were created in Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, and Guinea Conakry.

Nowadays, the different national components of the Network have been recognized everywhere by the quality and quantity of initiatives in the field of law and justice.

The importance of the activities carried out today by the various components of the Network, as well as its degree of awareness makes it necessary to improve the cohesion of existing organizations.

At the same time, the numerous requests received by Avocats Sans Frontières impose a development of its international presence.

To be the voice of the voiceless and to bring justice to the most vulnerable people is our mission.

Why lawyers without borders

Created in 1992, the ASF Movement has since gone from strength to strength due to the networking of its
members.
Its principle goal is to protect the rights of the vulnerable, through the skills and commitment of its members who are mostly lawyers but also judges, in-house lawyers and interested members of the public.
These volunteers are part of the community of Human Rights defenders along with activists in other organisations, unionists, journalists and others who become spokespeople for the oppressed.
They are too often harassed, sued, incarcerated and sometimes murdered because of their actions. That is why their defence is a priority for the ASF Network.
With a presence in Africa, America, Asia, Oceania and Europe, the 21 member organisations are well placed for this task, in close collaboration with other Human Rights organisations.

Why a network of national ASFs

The ASF Network was set up in 2009. Today it counts 21 national organisations, with many others currently being formed.
The lawyers who are members of the Network have received technical training, including in the use of
international legal tools to protect human rights, methodological training about the functioning of the association, as well as the training of trainers.
The lawyers from the different organisations are able to ensure an efficient defence, both in their countries and abroad, with, whenever necessary, the support of one or several organisations who are members of the Network.
The Network’s goal is to ensure the empowerment of each of its members as well as solidarity between its different components.
Several projects and campaigns have been set up thanks to the relationships developed within the Network.
The organisations that are members of the Network have also organised defence or access to justice projects in their own countries.
