Virology

African Swine Fever Virus ASFV is a large cytoplasmically replicating icosahedral virus that contains a linear double-stranded DNA genome. The genome varies in length between 170 and 190 kbp (Blasco et al. 1989). ASFV has similarities with two other groups of cytoplasmic DNA viruses, the Poxviruses and Iridoviruses, but is sufficiently different from these families to be classified as the only member of a separate virus family, the Asfarviridae, genus Asfivirus (Dixon et al.2000, Salas et al. 1999). It infects vertebrate hosts of the Suidae family and argasid ticks of the genus Ornithodoros and it is the only known DNA arbovirus.
