Transmission

Spread of the disease can occur through pig to pig contact, mechanical carriage by humans or equipment, contaminated injection needles, ticks or uncooked swill (garbage).

Infected pigs shed high concentrations of ASF virus in secretions and excretions. The virus survives well in the environment and in meat, predisposing for spread via contaminated livestock pens or by feeding poorly cooked garbage.
