Virology Disease Transmission Sylvatic Cycle Occurrence Pathogenesis

Sylvatic Cycle

ASFV persists in nature by a sylvatic cycle of transmission between wild suids (bushpig, warthog Phacochoerus aethiopicus) and ticks of the Ornithodoros family O. moubata and O. erraticus, which infest their burrows. ASF virus can replicate to high titres in ticks and transtadial, transovarial and sexual transmissions were demonstrated. Ornithodoros ticks were shown to harbour the virus and transmit it to pig for 588 das after infection. Even persistence of the virus in O. erraticus for up to 8 years has been reported.
